Global ocean-protection event will now take place virtually from March 1-4, due to the continuing Omicron outbreak
The 9th annual World Ocean Summit will take place virtually from March 1-4, 2022, due to the continuing Omicron outbreak.
Organisers Economist Impact, part of the Economist Group, confirmed the event will no longer go ahead in Lisbon, Portugal, in a brief statement.
“With the tightening of travel restrictions in many countries following the spread of the virus, the health and safety of our attendees, speakers, sponsors and colleagues remains our primary concern.
“Although we are disappointed not to be convening in person this year, we are looking forward to welcoming you to a top-quality event. We continue to work with the Portuguese government and all our sponsors to meet 2030 targets and accelerate sustainability in the ocean economy.”
The Summit brings together industry leaders to offer insights for yacht owners and investors.
Speakers this year include Amina Mohammed, deputy secretary-general UN; Thoriq Ibrahim, founder and president, Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance; Peggy Kalas, director, High Seas Alliance; Dorothee Herr, manager, ocean and climate change, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN); and Nina Jensen, chief executive of REV Ocean.
Since 2012, The Economist Group has convened the annual World Ocean Summit as part of the Group’s World Ocean Initiative. The aim is to drive an agenda of ocean protection that brings together people from business, government and civil society.
Asia-Pacific Boating recently partnered with Economist Impact as a Supporting Organisation for the World Ocean Summit Asia-Pacific 2021, which ran from December 6-10.
