The 43.5m aluminium yacht, the largest built by the Finnish shipyard to date, features a telescopic keel and dual-energy technology.

Nautor Swan has begun construction of the Swan Alloy 44, a 43.5m aluminium sailing yacht that will be the largest sailing yacht built by the Finnish shipyard to date. It is also the first aluminium yacht in the company’s 60-year history.

Construction is underway at Gouwerok Shipyard in the Netherlands, where the first structural sections, including the keel and engine room foundations, are being welded. Once the aluminium hull and deck are complete, the yacht will be transported to Viareggio, Italy, for final outfitting and delivery. Launch is scheduled for 2028.

The Swan Alloy 44 is designed by naval architect Malcolm McKeon, with interiors by Paris-based Studio Liaigre. The project introduces Swan Alloy, a range of aluminium sailing yachts exceeding 40m in length.

Massimo Perotti, executive chairman of Sanlorenzo, attended the start of construction and has commissioned the first Swan Alloy yacht.

“This is my first sailing yacht, and I feel a special emotion after so many motor yachts,” said Perotti.

“For Nautor Swan, this project opens a new chapter. It takes the brand into dimensions never explored before, while remaining faithful to the values that have defined Swan for sixty years.”

The yacht has a 9.45m beam and a telescopic keel, giving it a variable draft of between 4.30m and 6.30m. Estimated gross tonnage is 299 GT. The mast will be supplied by Southern Spars and the sails by Doyle.

Construction and technical development

The Swan Alloy 44 will use dual-energy technology, drawing on hybrid propulsion developments from both Sanlorenzo and Nautor Swan. The project is intended to provide onboard energy generation and storage while sailing, with the stated objective of achieving full energy autonomy.

Malcolm McKeon Design is working with Nautor Swan’s Italian division, including its Technical Office and New Product Development team, as well as the Finnish yard. The teams are responsible for the yacht’s design and engineering, with aluminium construction used for its structural and design requirements. Studio Liaigre is responsible for the interior design.

Although construction is split between the Netherlands and Italy, Nautor Swan continues to oversee key elements of the project, including its design approach, performance studies and supply-chain coordination.

The Swan Alloy 44 is the first model in the new Swan Alloy range. Nautor Swan has appointed brokerage house Edmiston to support the commercial launch of the range.
