During the Covid-19 lockdowns last winter, the Maldives emerged as a top charter destination, with the world’s biggest charter yacht, the 136m Flying Fox spending the winter there.

Delivered¬†in 2006 by Perini Navi,¬†the¬†Maltese¬†Falcon¬†redefined the world of yacht design thanks to her use of the Dynarig sailing system. The rig uses freestanding masts and sectional sails that unfurl from inside the masts. The sails can be deployed or furled by the push of a button. Her original owner, venture capitalist Tom Perkins, would be made famous in the 2007 book Mine’s Bigger: Tom Perkins and the Making of the Greatest Sailing Machine Ever Built.
This system was only recently completed on a second yacht, Black Pearl, by Oceanco. The Dutch yard is also rumoured to be building a sailing superyacht for Jeff Bezos, which may also employ a Dynarig.
