The first photos of Princess Yachts’ new X95 have emerged, following the yard’s end to the shutdown and the return of 80 per cent of Princess’ 3,000 employees. The X95 is a radical rethink on the style and layout of a 29-metre yacht, and a major stylistic departure for the historic British marquee brand. It also promises a significant step up in fuel efficiency compared to Princess’ Y95.

The concept was unveiled at the January 2020 Boot Dusseldorf as the “Super Fly” X Class, described as a “luxury SUV of the seas”. It was fitting that Princess turned to legendary Italian design house Pininfarina, which has famously created cars for Ferrari, Alfa Romeo and Maserati, as well as private jets. Pininfarina partnered with naval architect Bernard Olesinski, Princess Yachts’ longstanding design partner.

The aim was to boost the amount of onboard space, both on the exterior and interior. The flybridge and main deck of the X95 extend to nearly the full length of the yacht, a feat largely unheard of in the “pocket superyacht” category. The flybridge reaches 22 metres in length, which Princess says is about double that of a yacht the same lenght overall. The designers claim an increase of 40 per cent more indoor space than a motor yacht of similar size, and around 10 percent more outdoor space.

“The unique open plan architecture is brought to life through our design partnership with the legendary styling house Pininfarina. This leap forward in space and versatility mirrors recent innovations from luxury automotive brands which have developed crossover models,” says Princess Yachts Executive Chairman Anthony Sheriff.

The X95 has a fuel capacity of 13,400 litres and a top speed of 26 knots, with Princess Yachts promising extra range. The X95 design brief started with the Y95 platform, but incorporated a wave-piercing bow that extends the waterline forward and provides a fine, high deadrise entry for a sea-kindly ride.

The Y95 is powered by two, 2,000HP engines, with a 13,400-litre fuel tank, achieving top speeds of between 23 and 25 knots. The X95, powered by two 1,9000HP engines, manages the higher speeds with 5 per cent reduction in overall power.
