First foray into yacht design for acclaimed interior architect Vincenzo De Cotiis
The Magellano 25 Metri, which premiered at the Genoa International Boat Show last week, is the latest release from Italian brand Azimut Yachts. The 25-metre yacht, built in carbon fibre and fibreglass, features artistic interiors by designer and architect Vincenzo De Cotiis and exteriors by renowned yacht designer Ken Freivokh.
Freivokh designed the exteriors of the Magellano 74 in 2009, and is also overseeing exterior design of the upcoming Magellano 30 Metri, while the project marks De Cotiis’ first foray into interior yacht design.
De Cotiis worked with a special type of resin to create parchment-coloured surfaces that add an unusual element to the interior settings. This effect is contrasted neatly against a variety of types of wood and other materials, including brushed Verde Alpi marble, tessellated dark walnut wood, carpet, polished brass, lacquered wood, and ribbed wood.
A fully glazed superstructure, created to “convey the feeling of a penthouse overlooking the sea”, is the central element around which the rest of the design flows. A raised pilothouse with a direct link to the exterior helm station on the fly deck makes the boat particularly suited to long-distance cruising, with a layout that emphasises privacy for owners and guests.
The innovative cockpit design features a retractable panel that can be lowered to leave a transparent parapet, transforming the space into a wide terrace with unimpeded views onto the sea. The same panel, which also serves as the garage hatch, then unfolds to create a spacious bathing platform by the water’s edge.
While in ‘Hotel Mode’, on-board systems are fed by dedicated lithium ion battery packs in lieu of generators for up to six hours during the day and up to eight hours at night, when the electrical power need of the yacht naturally decreases.
