Hong Kong design firm M51 Concepts has released details of the Amplitude, a cutting-edge new sailing yacht based around an innovative inflatable rigging system.

Taking its inspiration from another M51 yacht concept, the M/Y Pendulum, the new motor sail yacht Amplitude has been designed to have as little impact on the environment as possible.

A key component of the new concept’s design is two inflatable wing sails, a new developing technology that offers a lot of advantages, including reducing complex deck equipment such as winches and halyards. Easily inflated or deflated, the sails can be easily controlled by computer for automatic sailing and optimization, are usable in various wind conditions, and offer a smooth, balanced way of sailing, according to the design studio.

On the Amplitude, the wing sails would be used in conjunction with the prop drive as an assist to reduce fuel consumption but as the technology improves, they could be used alone on a vessel this size. The main propulsion for the Amplitude is a hybrid electric set-up consisting of HVO generators with electric motor drives and battery banks that are charged by the generators and/or by the 266 sqm array of solar panels.

Exterior highlights of the yacht concept, which features an aluminium hull and composite superstructure, include an aft deck swim platform that offers a large swimming pool and alfresco dining and ample lounge space just above the ocean level. The vessel caters to 12 guests with a layout comprising of a master suite, two VIP cabins, four twin cabins and two staff cabins.

Planter boxes with Beach grasses surround the seating area while on the main deck, a semi-enclosed table for 12 offers sublime alfresco dining in all weather conditions.

The exterior spaces of the bridge deck have been designed to replace the typical sun deck of a similar sized motor yacht with a hot tub and seating on the forward deck. However, the design still allows for plenty of lounge space aft, with built in sun beds.

Interior highlights include modern decor that is futuristic but which also pays homage to the marine world with more traditional yacht materials, such as wood and marble used throughout.

The bridge deck is the main living and entertainment area for guest and features a large open space with vaulted ceilings punctuated with sky lights that allow for plenty of natural light. The main space boasts a dining area, and a lounge with a bar that wraps around the aft inflatable mast base, and which serves guests inside and outside just as effectively.

Another unique feature is the forward wall, which is made up of flatscreens, which can display the front view from the bow of the ship for a truly immersive experience, or can be used as a home cinema space. The full beam master cabin also features a display wall for the same effect and has an in room corner bathtub with  glass walls for separation and moisture control.

The Amplitude also has a large full beam garage to store all tender and toy, all electric of course.
